Bpb workshop Cologne
The aim of the workshop was to involve young people and inspire them to take action. Soils are an element in climate protection and nutrition, but are often forgotten. During the workshop, a great deal of interest and individual call to action and solutions were developed.
A place for knowledge exchange
In a world increasingly aware of the environmental challenges we face, fostering healthy soils has become a critical focus for sustainable agriculture and ecological well-being. Recently, we had the privilege of collaborating with the German Federal Agency for Civic Education (BPB) and the Franco-German Youth Office (DFJW/OFAJ) to present an insightful workshop entitled “Healthy Soils” as part of the YOU:KO series. This series serves as an engaging platform that brings young people together to discuss pressing issues and explore innovative solutions. By partnering with BPB and DFJW/OFAJ, we aimed to raise awareness about soil health among youth and inspire them to take an active role in soil conservation efforts. The workshop attracted a diverse group of participants eager to learn about the importance of soil health and its impact on food security, climate change, and ecosystem resilience.
The workshop highlights
The workshop, held in an interactive format, featured a lineup of a theory part, hands-on activities, and group discussions. Participants explored the various dimensions of soil health, including its role in sustaining agricultural productivity, enhancing biodiversity, and combating climate change. • The theory Insights: We shared our knowledge on soil composition, nutrients, and the biological organisms that contribute to soil vitality. We also emphasized the intricate relationships between healthy soils and the broader environment, highlighting how soil is a living ecosystem that requires proper care. • Interactive Sessions: Attendees engaged in hands-on activities that illustrated practical methods for improving soil health. From learning about soil structure, colour, taste and smell. They also asked about the process of composting and how to turn trash into treasure. Participants also discovered actionable steps they can take in their own communities to restore and protect soil. • Collaborative Learning: Group discussions allowed participants to share their experiences and ideas on sustainability and soil preservation. This collaborative atmosphere fostered a sense of community and encouraged participants to consider how they can advocate for healthy soil practices in their localized contexts.
Empowering the next generation and looking ahead
One of the core objectives of the YOU:KO workshop was to empower young individuals to become advocates for soil health. The event emphasized that small actions—such as practicing sustainable gardening, reducing waste, and supporting local farmers—can collectively make a significant impact on soil health and environmental conservation. Through engaging discussions, participants were encouraged to think critically about food systems and the interconnectedness of our choices as consumers. They left the workshop armed with new knowledge and a stronger commitment to soil health advocacy. The YOU:KO workshop on Healthy Soils was more than just an event; it was a call to action. As the participants spread the knowledge gained to their peers and communities, we remain dedicated to fostering future workshops and initiatives that elevate the conversation around soil health, sustainability, and ecological stewardship. In collaboration with organizations like the German Federal Agency for Civic Education and the Franco-German Youth Office, betterSoil is committed to nurturing a generation of informed, engaged, and passionate advocates for healthy soils. Together, we can cultivate change and promote a more sustainable and thriving planet.
