Livestock for better soils
As part of our management consultancy, we spoke to a farmer about reducing emissions from manure in his livestock farming. He also asked us how soil health could be improved by fixing nutrients in the manure and reducing nutrient leaching for his cropland.
The problems are obvious
Livestock farming is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, particularly through methane production from enteric fermentation and manure management. However, by implementing innovative strategies, farmers can reduce these emissions and improve soil health at the same time.
Our recommendation made sense
Our approach was to introduce improved management practices to optimize and reduce methane production during digestion and manure storage. This can be achieved by incorporating feed additives that help minimize methane emissions while improving animal health and productivity and reducing veterinary costs. In addition to reducing emissions, we suggested to improve soil health through the proper management of manure. By implementing practices such as nutrient management planning, the farmer can effectively use manure as a valuable resource for soil fertility. This helps reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers, minimize nutrient runoff, and improve overall soil health.
