betterSoil in Saxony-Anhalt
Typical ice-age soil! A farmer from Saxony-Anhalt asked us for support. His type of soil has experienced several ice-ages and is light sandy. The soil has low water retention capacity and poor nutrient storage. This leads to high water consumption and low crop yields.
The Perils of Light Sandy Soil
The soils in Saxony-Anhalt have experienced several ice ages in the past, which is why farmers are faced with a particular challenge: light sandy soils. Light sandy soils are characterised by a loose, grainy texture that allows water to run off quickly and plants to die of thirst. Farmers in Saxony-Anhalt are constantly struggling with the problem of high water consumption in order to supply their plants with sufficient water. In addition, this type of soil can only store limited nutrients, which leads to nutrient deficiencies and lower crop yields.
The soil is sick
These challenges can be frustrating for farmers and impact their livelihoods and the local agricultural industry. Low water holding capacity and low yield are the main problems. The soil needs to be able to absorb more water and nutrients over time. After a long discussion and conversation with the farmer, we suggested improving the water holding capacity of the light sandy soil by incorporating organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure. This helps to retain moisture and improve the soil's ability to store nutrients.
The water is there
The water table is only 2 metres below the ground. Water is there, but the roots of the crops can't find it. We have proposed an agroforestry system as a solution to bring the water to the roots of his annual plants. Trees and deep-rooted plants also reduce the evaporation rate of the soil and crops, making more water available over time. Cover crops such as legumes can also help to provide nutrients to the soil. Legumes have the added benefit of fixing nitrogen and enriching the soil naturally.
Farming on ice-age soils possible
Farming on Saxony-Anhalt's light sandy soils is not without its problems, but it is possible with good management. There are practical solutions to improve water utilisation and increase crop yields. By applying sustainable practices such as soil improvement, agroforestry and crop rotation, farmers can overcome the limitations of light sandy soils. With determination and innovation, farmers in Saxony-Anhalt can thrive and secure a better future for agriculture in the region.
